Western style raku firing, unlike many other firing processes, is fast. The results can be unpredictable in exciting ways, and the colors achieved can be vibrant and rich. Over the course of a day we will fire two to three times, allowing us to learn from results and respond immediately. We heat ware up to red hot, remove it from the kiln while still glowing, and place it in trash cans filled with combustible materials. After cooling we will discuss ways to further finish and refine our pieces.
Please bring 3-6 pieces of bisque-ware to fire. B-mix, other stoneware clays, or raku clays are absolutely fine, but they should be smaller than 10 inches by 10 inches. Glazing will happen on the day of the workshop. Registrants can pick up 5# of raku clay at The Meetinghouse to create work for either this firing or our later summer workshop.
Hair must be tied back, and natural fiber clothing should be worn. Participation in various parts of the process is encouraged and based on each individual participant’s comfort level.
*Refunds will not be given within one week of the beginning of class. A $25 processing fee will be retained from any refund. If a class must be cancelled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be given.
